Extend flights for CHEAP

I have been playing with those $30 Air Hog planes for a couple years now. The Ember 2 is definitely worth the higher price. I became adept with it after only an hour or so. I can now do loops, fly it inverted, and land it gracefully. Having an elevator control means that I can get it on the ground when it encounters a strong wind at altitude. It is flyable in light breezes, unlike the Air Hogs.

Almost all my flying time with this one has been on rough gravel in the desert. I crashed it quite few times at first, including power dives into the rocks, with no real damage to the plane. When I crashed it upside down while flying inverted it broke the prop, bent the prop shaft, and--I thought--destroyed the rudder. As it turns out, it simply tore the hinge tape on the rudder. A quick trip to the local hobby shop got me a roll of hinge tape, a new prop, a bottle of foam-safe CA glue (just in case), and a new prop shaft, all for under twenty dollars. If I had needed a new tail assembly, they had them in stock.

I had a problem with the transmitter binding to the plane and called Horizon Hobby tech support. I left a message rather than sitting on hold. They called me back in a couple hours and walked me through the fix. I was very pleased.

Two years later: After two years of intermittent use, this thing is still great fun. I have broken no more parts, although I have gone through a few batteries. I have crashed it dozens and dozens of times. I like the challenge of flying it in light breezes, something I can't do with my RC helicopter.

  1. I purchased 3 of these batteries to supplement my Blade mSR RTF. Between the included 2 batteries, my 3 additional ones, and the included 4 battery charger, I can fly as long as I want to, without worrying about waiting for batteries to charge up, it's perfect!

Please note, though, that the included batteries in the mSR package are 120mAh. These 150mAh batteries have 25% more capacity, and increase flight time by approximately the same amount. Also, because they are heavier and longer, they change the balance of the helicopter a bit. To remedy, just don't push them in all the way, leave maybe 1/8 to a 1/4 inch left before pushing it in all the way and it will balance perfectly, though pushed in all the way doesn't throw it unusably out of balance anyway.

  2. This is now my favorite battery for my MCX, MCX S300, MSR helis and also my Micro J-3 and Micro P-51 planes. I've replaced all my 110 and 120s with these and the flight times and power are both much better. Highly recommended.

  3. Works great with my Blade MCX2 with no problem. Seems to last longer than the original battery that comes the the helicopter.

These cells do just what they are supposed to do. If you do not exceed discharge rate, they will work reliably and without trouble. Nice and cheap power source for micro planes and helis from E-flite.

  6. Just got my first of the new 150mAh Eflite batteries. Initial impression is great! Seem to be getting at least 3-4 times the flight times of the old standard batteries (altho some of them may not be at their full capacity anymore)running in the MCX Blade/S300. Will also be using in the Vapor and Micro P51 Mustang planes. Connector is solid, and altho the battery is longer, it still fits great in the helis and planes and the slightly added weight does not seem to bother the COG, may be even better for my flight feel. Fits great in the standard AA chargers as well (might take a bit longer to charge, but worth it). Love it so far! Will have to order more...

  7. This battery lasts longer than the smaller one that comes with the Blade mSR. I find the extra length adds some forward weight that gives the heli additional forward speed. That is a nice bonus.

  8. I made the decision to upgrade my Li-Po battery from 120mAh to the 150mAh battery. Cost was minimal, shipping was realistic and timely. Product was in new condition and worked as expected. Good experience with this transaction.

  9. I bought 4 of these batteries to replace the original batteries that came with my Blade mCX2 and mSR helicopters. I was worried about the larger size (1/4 inch longer) throwing of the center of gravity, but these batteries came with spacers to keep the CG in place. Now I have longer flights with the new batteries.
