1619 Broadway Brill Building Project

From the first sound bites, to the last note - a continuation in the musical growth and evolution of Mr. Elling. The more I listen to this set, the more I enjoy it. Having recently seen him perform many of the compositions from this album, I remain thoroughly amazed at his and his musical cohort to interpret tuns we all know in ways that make them new and amazing. Laurence Hobgood is amazing, as are the drummer, bassist, and guitarist John Mclean. Mr. Elling's interpretation of Paul Simon's American Tune is simply stunning. The album holds together well, and offers a full range of familiar and not so familiar compositions performed as only Mr. Elling can do. A great addition to the KE collection. He and his musical companions are continuing an amazing musical journey started LONG ago, never stopping in one place for too long.

  1. Kurt is a wonderful jazz musician and I love how he moves from jazz standards to pop songs, treating each as a work to be examined and mined for new messages. Purists who complain about this set forget that this is what jazz is all about. Laurence Hobgood's arrangements are nothing short of brilliant. American Tune is classic, but so is So Far Away. Love this entire album. Kudos, Kurt!

  2. Mr Elling continues his reign as one of the top jazz male artists of our time. His reinterpretation of classics like "I Only Have Eyes for You" is nothing less than amazing! He brings new life to this and several "classics" included in this compilation. His stylings are unique and well worth your experiencing! The recording itself is "show off" quality on a good system!
