Air Hogs Battle Tracker Helicopter

This Air Hogs set is a blast. Play solo or play with a friend. Let your imagination fly with this fun set.

The hardest part is learning to fly the copter. It's tricky, but not impossible. The copter is surprisingly rugged. It's crashed and dropped from tall heights a lot and is still working fine. The copter has a mini-rechargeable system that receives its charge from the remote control (take 6 AA batteries). Each charge only last a few minutes, but those will be full of silly fun. My 9 year old giggle bunches learning to fly the copter then shooting the soft yellow discs. That copter shoot so fast, you can barely see the yellow disc! But it doesn't hurt if you get hit by it by accident.

The Battle Tracker is the best. The computer voice is reminiscent of the robots in Dark Colony game. It can be put on automatic or can be manipulated by remote. The foam tubes it shoots are harmless, it doesn't hurt if you or a pet get hit. It, too ,shoots very fast.

This Air Hogs Battletracker set is a lot of fun.

  1. We were skeptical when our 9-year-old son asked for this for Christmas. But we got a great deal on Amazon at about $70, so we decided to bite the bullet and splurge. We - and our boys - have not been disappointed.

The Air Hogs helicopter itself that comes with this set is surprisingly robust and durable. I'm surprise how well it survives the inevitable crashes it endures, but it's remarkably tough. Battery life is good and charge time is minimal.

This chopper is rated age 10+, but we've been surprised how quickly both our boys have gotten the hange of flying it - particularly our 7-year-old. Adjusting the pitch so it flies level and without spinning is a bit delecate (accomplished with a dial on the hand control), but it flies reasonably well eventually.

The Battle Tracker - well, its a total gas! Whether in the self-tracker mode where it automatically tracks and fires its foam missiles at the flying helicopter, or in manual mode where one person fires while the other flies, it's tremendous fun. When the charge runs down on the helicopter, it becomes the boys' weapon of choice for attacking their action figures, Lego creations or each other.

If I were a kid their age, I would consider this one of the coolest toys ever. Heck, I'm 48 and I consider this one of the coolest toys I'VE ever had!

My son has another Air Hogs' helicopter so he is pretty experienced flying these--but this is his first helicopter that actually shoots something and that did make things a lot more fun.

The set comes with a helicopter that shoots small disks and a battle station that shoots nerf-like projectiles. The goal of the helicopter is to hit the radar dish at the top of the battle station which then shuts down the station. The goal of the battle station is to shoot down the helicopter. Several times my son was able to hit the dish from close range--but it wasn't hard enough to actually turn off the station. We haven't had enough time to determine why but if I do I will add to this post.

The feature I found the most fascinating is that the battle station can actually be set to automatic and it automatically tracks and shoots at the helicopter. The video I included has the station set to automatic so you can see how well it tracks the helicopter on its own. Otherwise, it does have a remote control that would allow a playmate to control the battle station. This is great when you have more than one child who wants to play.

The battle station takes helicopter take a total of 10 AA batteries. The helicopter needs to be recharged after a couple minutes of flight--but that is pretty typical of these light weight flying vehicles that cannot carry their own batteries due to weight issues. I haven't timed how long it takes to recharge the helicopter but if I do I will post that later as well.

Another nice feature of this set is that both the battle station and helicopter could be used in a variety of different play settings to shoot at any small item (blocks, action figures, etc.) you want to knock over.

Over the years we've owned a lot of different Air Hogs products and this may prove to be one of our favorites.

  5. I'll start out by saying that I'm not by any means an expert with remote control helicopters. In the past, I've played with several that go up and float randomly around until you crash, but nothing more complicated than this. My fiance and I found this set at a really great price, and were pretty excited to get it home. The packaging is attractive and presents the product well, but as other reviewers have said, it was a bit of work to get the product out of the packaging. We found that the helicopter came out of the box with some charge to it, but we went ahead and charged it anyway, after about 20 minutes of putting batteries into the pieces and reading the instructions, we were ready to fly.

For the helicopter, we were pretty impressed with the control. You have to be gentle with the throttle, and I can see how that might be difficult for some kids, but really it's just a matter of learning the controls. We had the trim properly adjusted within about 10 minutes, and were steadily flying shortly after that. I've never flown any of the really high dollar rc helicopters before, but I was quite amazed with the level of control that this offered. Contrary to the included instructions, we were playing in a rather cramped living room with tons of obstructions. Within an hour of playing with it, we were successfully able to take off, navigate through the rooms of our home, and land on a pre-determined space. We did encounter some control issues when flying near a running fan, open window, or anywhere where our home had a draft. Air currents can certainly blow the helicopter around. We experienced about 20 minutes of constant flight before the battery started to drain and performance slowed, then about 5 minutes more play before we couldn't achieve flight at all. We crashed the copter 40 or 50 times, and it always came out of the crashes beautifully, working just as well as before.

Overall I think we would have gotten a good deal for the price, just with the helicopter, but the really fun part of this set is the tracking missile battery. It's got two modes, one where it automatically tracks the helicopter, and one where a second player can control the missiles. When you start it up, it's "eyes" light up and it announces itself in a deep robotic voice that had us cracking up. One reviewer mentioned that the y axis inversion was a problem (Pressing up on the controll pad moves the missile battery down), but that really has a very simple solution. I also disliked the y-axis inversion, but found that holding the control upside down so that I was operating the control pad with my right hand and firing with the left worked perfectly. We had no trouble controlling the missile battery. When switched to auto mode, the missiles will search for the helicopter, and when it's found, it will automatically track and fire missiles at the helicopter. It never managed to hit the copter, but it got pretty close, and was just really fun to watch.

Overall, we had a really great time playing with this helicopter and the missile battery, and it's one that we'll definitely keep out. I'd highly recommend this product, you're going to get a great time and a lot of entertainment for your money.

Overall, I would highly recommend this toy to anyone who wants a fun time with lots of laughs.

  6. I got this package to evaluate the suitability of R/C helicopters as toys for grandchildren.
Factors in its favor are: hours and hours of FUN.
Contrary factors are: fragility of copter; small parts which might be swallowed
    (by kids and/or dogs).

My grandkids had a ball with the family weiner dog, but firing at him resulted in chewed-up
disc-missiles. The accompanying A.R.T. unit was originally avoided, as it returned fire against the
chopper - thus more missiles for the dog to intercept. Keeping doggie away from the action
revealed the second half of the show: the "radar" tracking unit. It speaks, and its comments
are a real hoot. The voice is a deadpan, monotone reminiscent of the original Voder-type automated
    voice systems.

The A.R.T. technology is amazing. When the chopper gets with six feet of the "radar", the unit comes
to life. However, it is not really a motion sensor technology; it is sensitized to the high-pitched
    whine of the helicopter.

We tried the unit outdoors, away from the dog, and the chopper's shortcomings were exposed; any
slight breeze causes instability. If you don't have sufficient altitude for the "Steady-Fly
Technology auto-correction to kick in, expect a crash. If the chopper blades catch the brunt
of the impact, damage could be fatal. Any mis-alignment in the blades would result in an unflyable
    unit.

I will be paying attention to Air Hog products from now on. They are a high quality outfit tuned in
    to family fun.

  7. My son, 14, set this up and loves it. The robot that takes down the helicopter is freaky with his robotic voice and ability to track the helicopter to shoot at it with styro darts.

My son has had RC helicopters before and they have broken quickly as soon as they crash to the floor. Because this one is made to be attacked it is sturdy.

Be sure to get all the pieces from the box- which is an event to extract the robot and helicopter all on its own. We didn't see the discs and had to run out to the trash to retrieve them from the cardboard.

  8. My daughter has one of the other air hog helicopters so she has some experience with these (but by far is not an expert and neither am I). When I received this though we were intrigued as this is the first air hogs product that I have ever seen that has items built into it that allows you to either fire from the helicopter or now from the Turret. The idea behind this is that you have to use the helicopter to fire on the radar dish on the radar, while being careful to not be shot down by the robotic turret which can be set on automatic and allowed to track the helicopter (and it actually does a very good job at it). As in the other air hog products that we have tried in the past, the helicopter has to be recharged after a short period because it does not hold a large amount of charge (and does not have a large independent battery pack either).

I have to say that in trying this out we were all quite impressed, and have to say that the system is very click and works quite well. I was impressed by how well the turret tracks the helicopter, but also how fun it was to try and aim at the target that you were trying to hit while being fired upon as well. If you have tried Air Hogs in the past you will find that this is a whole new animal, but that it is so much fun! All-in-all I highly recommend this to all, not only for it's interactive nature, but also for how fun it was overall, you will definitely not be disappointed!
