Blade BLH3100 NEW 120 SR RTF

This was my first R/C helicopter. I see a lot of reviews that say not to start out with this model, but to start with a CX2 or CX3. While this is not bad advice I would like to add that I believe the 120SR can be your first heli. If you start out with the CX2/3 you'll want more very quickly. Unless your in to collecting you'll wish you'd skipped right to this model. Having said that I'll warn that younger kids might not do so well with this as a first. If you are experienced and careful, however, you will do just fine with the 120SR.
This heli has been very forgiving. Because it is light, it can take some fairly decent falls without breaking.
First thing is do your homework. Read and study about how R/C helis work and in particular how the 120SR works. If you can, upgrade your radio so you can tweak the settings. I use a DX6i.
Next, if this is for a youngster, the adult should learn the heli first and then help teach it to the younger. My 12 year old flies this fine. I will say that that he did have practice on a CX3 first, but I think he would have done fine going right into this 120SR.
Also, fly outside in the grass where you will have soft landings. If you fly inside or around hard surfaces you will break things quickly. Blades will break on walls and furniture, landing skids will break from hard landings or the body will break on rocks or concrete. If you stick to the grass you'll save money, time and frustration.
One last tip that has saved me breakage is whenever you see your going to crash, kill the throttle and just let the heli crash. You'll break less blades and save the motor.

This is a video of my brother and I flying our Blade helicopters for the first time. We both have the flight simulator called Realflight so we do have some helicopter time with this program.. The blue helicopter is the blade MSR and the Yellow is my 120 SR.

  2. The E-Flight Blade SR 120 is a great way to transition from the CX2 in to a standard Heli. This thing is next to indestructible which I am glad for as I have had my share of mishaps with this incredible little helicopter. The unit is stable and easy to fly and hover with minimal input. IT has enough power to fly out side in a light wind. Even though this thing is several times more expensive then the Air Hogs models I would recommend this over them as it has more control and better part support. You can go down to any local hobby store and find parts readily available for this unit. The only thing I have had to replace so far is the rotors and that is because I ran into a metal chair at full throttle which cracked one of the blades. The fix cost less about 4 dollars for a new set of blades and I am back in action.

This helicopter will be a good introduction to the hobby. Where I would not let my daughters fly my E-Flights Blade CX2, I have let them fly the Blade 120 SR. IT is just that durable in a crash.

    Cheers.

  3. The 120 SR is very forgiving, and a great chopper to progress to from coaxials. I've had it for a week now, and have learned to hover quite well and have moved on to more advanced maneuvers. I have tried to fly it outside, but it was too windy for my skill; a more experienced pilot could fly it quite easily in light to moderate wind.

The chopper is very durable, although it is not indestructible. I have broken a tail rotor and the landing gear, but both are available locally and on line at very reasonable prices (most parts are under 5 bucks). There are also several companies who sell upgraded aluminum and carbon fiber parts for these birds, so if you're into modding, you will not be disappointed.

A lot of sites compare this chopper to the mSR. I have flown a friend's mSR, and inside they handle very much alike, although you will need more room for the 120. Outside, the mSR is practically impossible to fly. The 120 has enough mass to be more stable in light winds, and with practice, I believe it could easily be flown outdoors.

This is not a toy, please don't buy it for young kids. It is very stable, but takes practice and dedication to learn to fly properly. In the hands of a young child, I suspect it would not survive long at all. However, if you are looking for a quality, durable hobby-grade model to learn fixed pitch single rotor flight with, I highly recommend the 120 SR.

  4. Recently purchased the Blade 120 SR. Overall it is a great heli with one main flaw: The tail motors on these helis die very easily. I've contacted Horizon Hobby to see if they will send me a few replacements (I've gone through 3 in only 1 month of owning it). I am a rather aggressive pilot and love flying it! Would love it even more if the tail motors didn't die so easily. Great for flying indoors and seems to handle soft breezes nicely!

  5. I purchased this product with a bit of apprehension as to how easy it would be to fly and if I crashed it how easily it would break. Having never flown any type of RC aircraft before, not even a coaxial helicopter, I was somewhat scared about the 120 SR being too advanced for me. However, after spending 10 minutes learning to fly the 120, I can definitely say that if you are a beginner thinking of picking up an RC heli for the first time, this is a great model to learn on.

This model is a lot more maneuverable than the coaxial models you generally find for sale at the shopping mall, but still has stable flight characteristics thanks to the flybar. What's great about the 120 SR is that it can put up with a new fliers learning curve. The 120 took at least 15 fast crashes into our walls yet after every crash it just kept on flying. Now with just under an hour of experience I have complete confidence when flying the helicopter and taking it through narrow doorways and halls is not a problem.

One suggestion I would make when purchasing this RTF kit is to order some extra batteries with it. The included battery takes about 2 hours to charge and only provides about 8 minutes of flying time. With 3 extra inexpensive batteries you can always have one charged and ready to go.

If you're looking to get into RC helicopters, this is a great first step on your journey to more advanced and professional aircraft.

  6. The HORIZON COMPANY produces the most durable (Quality) Lineup of R-C helicopters.
This one is THE logical step up fron the entry level of co-axial copters.

The BLADE SR120 RTF (RTF) MEANS READY-TO-FLY, IT DOES COMES WITH A REMOTE CONTROL TRANSMITTER.
THE BNF(less money) MEANS BIND-AND-FLY, AND REQUIRES THAT YOU OWN A COMPATIBLE REMOTE TRANSMITTER.

    The SR 120 RTF(fixed pitch copter)is powerful,with 8 to 10 minuites of flight time.
Add a couple of extra batteries and your "down-time" will be minimal.
(Battery charge time is only 20-25 Minuites/per battery)

Gradual steps seem to be the way to go rather than jumping into a $300 copter for your first flight !
A friend and I each bought this unit the same time.
He has become a better Pilot than me,but I'm catching up quick.

My local Hobby Shop can easily order each and every part (if needed).
If you do have a major crash this one can be rebuilt, like new.
(Unlike the cheaper that that may offer a few spare parts)
So, the good news is that the Copter can be repaired, and your investment is protected.
Better news is that ours are still flying without major repairs ! !

This Copter CAN fly in a light breeze outdoors, yet has survived multiple crashes with only minor adjustments.
DON'T SPEND YOUR VALUABLE DOLLARS ELSEWHERE ! FUN FACTOR: 5 STARS !

  7. This helicopter is really stable so you can hover it easily. Its like a bigger version of the mSR but I really find much more stable and easy to fly the 120SR probalby because its bigger size and better tail rotor response. Most of the time I fly it outdoors and its great, fast and agile but controlable. I now use the more "aggresive" setting on the swash plate so its more responsive when there is some wind. I'm really amazed how easy to fly is this model and the build quality. The rotors are strong and can spin on their base so they don't break easily.
Highly recommend this helicopter as a second model after having some experience with a coaxial model but it can be really used sucessfully as a first model because its great stability.

  8. Having purchased the Blade MCX2, and MSR, this was the logical next step in my progression to learn how to fly RC Helicopters. Having flown both the micro predecessors, I would have to say that for outdoor flying I greatly prefer the BLADE SR 120. It not only handles air currents better, but it is also more responsive to collective pitch forward and backward movements.

That being said however, it is also prone to quicker and faster collective yaw and rolling to the left and right and consequently will get out of control very quickly if your brain is not processing what is going on and telling your hands what they should be doing. If a crash does occur though, this helicopter has proven to be very durable and able to withstand smacks into the house or other objects close by.

Pros: better suited for outdoors over micro size blade helicopters, better motor in the tail over MSR, faster response and longer flight times (6 - 9 minutes), proven durability of Blade reputation, good helicopter to transition from micro SR.

Cons: fly bar and rotor connectors like to pop-off (a lot) on contact with ground or other objects, if you are not semi-experienced flyer indoors flight may be hazardous...

  9. I learned to fly on an mSR, and then stepped up to this helicopter. Lots of fun, flies very stable, and is everything i wanted. I wouldn't recommend learning on it though, because it cannot withstand crashes the same way the MSR can.
