In 2007, Fessenden and Guy sent Fessenden's brother, Staff Sgt. Chris Fessenden, a radio-controlled (RC) model truck outfitted with a wireless video camera to help him check for bombs under trucks and search for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on roadsides in Iraq. That same remote-control truck, essentially a souped-up children's toy, ended up preventing the potential deaths of six soldiers two weeks ago in Afghanista
Guy said he has been in contact with the Department of Defense and Traxxis, the maker of the truck, known as the Stampede, to help provide more of the toys to soldiers. On Monday night, Guy launched the website Trucks to Troops, where people can donate money to help send remote-control trucks to soldiers who can benefit from them.
We have two Traxxas trucks, a Stampede which we bought first, and a Summit, which we decided to invest on after years of fun with the Stampede corroborated that these are the best built toys in the planet.
BalasHapusI've had about twenty R/C trucks in the past, from cheap vehicles from "Toys'r US" to somewhat better Nikko trucks, but this is another level entirely. They are blazingly fast, easy to control and incredibly robust. I've had the trucks falling from a second floor into the pavement, jumping at 60mph and hitting a tree mid-flight, falling into the pool (both empty and full) and many, many other accidents. Other than some repairable damage, the trucks were perfectly operational afterwards.
Actually, the trucks really broke after two particularly harsh accidents, and that experience is what prompted me to write this review.
In one accident, my son was trying to beat me in a race (Stampede vs. Summit) and while going at VERY high speed he missed a turn and hit a wall corner straight ahead. Even worse, he hit the corner with only ONE of the wheels, the rest of the truck missing it. I would have expected such a hit to rip off the wheel and break the whole steering control. But no, it was just a broken joint and one small plastic piece that needed replacement. Easy to fix and the truck was like new after some minor repairs.
The second accident was even worse. Due to a mistake on my part, my youngest son got the wrong remote and he drove the Stampede (while watching the Summit) straight into a neighboring wall, at probably well over 60 mph (we have an upgraded motor on the Stampede, so it may have been up to 65 mph). It hit the wall straight ahead, which was enough to break the chassis in half, part of the front axle and the bumper. Yes, the truck was badly damaged. If it hadn't been a Traxxas I'm sure it would have been FUBAR. But I disassembled the broken pieces (it took me about two minutes to separate them), checked their prices online (on Amazon and in the official traxxas site) and found the spares for a total of... $14. The spares for the other repair were even cheaper, at $4.50. I was blown away. At those prices I could build a truck part by part, and get to a total price not much above of the pre-built price.
Maybe that sounds like normal to you but it's not. In the toy market, a typical spare part has a markup of maybe 300% if you are lucky. After all, once you need a spare you are a captive customer, and most companies will squeeze every penny from its current customers. Similar parts would cost probably $50 each on other brands. But not from Traxxas, the parts were very inexpensive, easy to find and easy to order. So now the truck is back up and running again, flying as always and ready for the next big crash, which I no longer fear.
So while the initial price might be high, the trucks will last a lifetime. They don't easily lose their entertainment value (hard when you have a waterproof, mudproof, snow and sandproof vehicle that can go over 60mph, jump six feet in the air and climb over large boulders) and can be upgraded to even more fun configurations.
Kudos to Traxxas not only for making the best toys in the planet, but also for treating their customers with respect and not overcharging them on spares. The day the trucks pass to a better life (like, if an eighteen wheeler drives over them) I will be buying again, and again, and again for as long as this continues to be true.
Bought the car as a gift for my son. He loved it so much we went back and bought a Slash for me to race him with.
BalasHapusBreak in your motor!!!!!!!! I did not and fried mine after one hard days run. Called taraxas and they explained what I should have done then sent me a no charge replacement for my mistake. The customer service is amazing.
Be warned! This is a very quick car that does loooooong wheel stands . You are going to hit things with it very hard. You will break parts on the car. Replacing things is pretty easy to do, but be warned you will be taking it apart from time to time.
When taraxas says water resistant they mean it. My son parked his in four feet of water recently. We took it to the garage' blew off the water with a compressor, wd40 to get some extra repellant... Re lubed the gears and it runs like always.
Great car and my son has a new stay out of trouble hobby with dad.
Humble newbie opinion.... This car is more fun to drive than the slash as a beginner... But I think the slash is probably the better design overall... I also like the newer sender for controlling the slash much more than the 3 foot antenna unit that comes with the stampede.
One last thing.... Started meeting other RC hobby folks shortly after this and they are a great bunch of people.

well you think this truck is fast with the stock motor in it i dropped a 200 dollar brushless motor combo bt castle kreations in it, along with a metal idle gear and it jumped from 30+ mph to about 40+mph
BalasHapusI bought this truck as an adult hobby for myself. I figured I could have some fun customizing and upgrading it. First, lets talk about the truck itself.
BalasHapusThe electric engine means it is very easy to maintain. Just charge and go. I have run my truck through the ringer. Hills, rocks, roads, kid chasing it, wheelies, flipping it over and banging against trees. This thing is extremely durable. After every couple runs I go through the make sure all the screws are tight but I have had no major problems and I run this truck hard. Once, my kid ran it into some concrete steps at full speed. This caused my left front shock cap to come off (not easily done). This truck it easy to work on and after reattaching the shock (a couple screws) we were back running again with no problem.
The Stampede does not offer as many customizable (hop-up) parts as the T-Maxx but it still have a good solution. Also, must hobby stores stock all the replacement parts if needed. It was a lot of fun to spray paint and create a custom body.
This truck goes about 30 MPH+. I had my wife drive down the street with me chasing her. I easily caught up with her (while doing a sweet wheelie).
I highly recommend purchasing a wheelie bar. This thing will stand up on its end very easily but with a wheelie bar you will have much more control and wont damage the rear of your truck. I also high recommend a custom front bumper. The little plastic one that come with the truck is fine but will not protect the truck if you really run into a tree at full speed. Again, this thing is very durable but for over $150+ it is worth it to protect your investment.
I run with 7.2 Venom 3000 batteries and get about 20 minutes of runtime with each one. I always charge at 2 amps.
I am not the music mom, i am her son and i am [...] for your info. I got this truck from my local hobby shop after researching and looking for a couple of weeks. Best [...] dollars ever spent. it is so much fun. It's REALLY FAST. it JUMPS REALLY WELL and is awesome. It has TONS OF TORQUE and is great. It handles great but if you turn a full speed it will flip. It being waterproof makes it so much better!!! People will push the traxxas slash because it's slightly more durable and handles better. If you want to offroad,go fast, jump, bash, and don't care about racing, GET THIS ONE!!! i am 100% glad i got it instead of the slash. it is so much fun.
BalasHapuspros:
FAST!!!
TONS OF TORQUE!!!
HANDLES GREAT!!!
SUPER TOUGH!!!
JUST PLAIN AWESOME!!!
cons:
if you turn at full speed it flips. no biggie. just letting u know.
Other then that one that doesn't really even matter, there are absolutely no others
Truely awesome...within 2 minutes of getting it out of the box it was running...and studpily fast compared to similar priced Tamiyas I have had.
BalasHapusThe more I have used and understood this car the more I am impressed with it (I read the manuals after using it 5 times). It has race, training and off-road modes. It has a clutch to reduce tie spin.
I bought 2 x 4300 mAH Nickel hydride batteries from Ebay for 56 USD including charger. These last about 30-40 minutes each!!!
What I love about this car:
-Cornering, acceleration and general handling were awesome.
-It's ready made yet can be rebuilt
-Quality of components compared to other similar priced models
-Availability of parts
-Design- It's simple, yet functional
Dislikes
- It has a steering wheel type radio unit- perhaps I am getting old. I prefer the lever radio units.
- Through my own stupidity I drive it too fast and keep hitting objects like sidewalks. The result is it rips apart the servo saver used in the steering. It takes 2 minutes to replace but in 40 runs I have now replaced this 3 USD piece 4 times. Durability could be improved here.
Bottom line- you'll love this car if you want an off-roader.
I had bought the kit version of this truck a while ago and I must say, it is a good, solid, and simple truck. I used this truck for racing, just for fun nothing serious, and it did well. Now I use it on my backyard dirt track and jump it off ramps. To give you an idea of how far it will jump, if you take an X factor kicker skateboard ramp and run it at full throttle, it will jump a distance of 3 to 4 feet.
