Best RC car for a kid & Dad

Best Review on Tonka Ricochet Replay Blue Green

Tonka Ricochet Replay Blue Green

I read several reviews and watched a bunch on RCMania's website before settling on this one. I ended up ordering three of them, one for me and two for my 7 year old nephew for Xmas presents. The car is very fast, and will run over all sorts of obstacles. The fact that if it gets flipped over and can keep running is a huge plus for anyone that had to chase down there toy after it flipped over and became about as helpless as a turtle on its back. The soft tires are grippy and are great fun on pavement, grass or gravel. It's tough especially when my nephew seems to crash head on into any rock, tree, patio table, person, you name it and it still is in one piece. We ordered some of the extra batteries off of this site to keep it going. You can buy longer lasting batteries for not much more... I think we spent $35 for two 2000mha 9.6v batteries and another charger which last about twice as long. I definitely think that you will not be disappointed especially if you get them for around the 29.99-39.99 price range that I've been seeing on Amazon... At toys-r-us and kmart they 89.99. Go for it!

  1. Sturdy and tough construction. Tonka quality, even though they outsourced it to China. It is quite large and the kids just loved it. It has large soft rubber tires, so it will not damage furniture, but it's still best outdoors. Everything about it is good, it even has two sides...top and bottom, in different colors. The controller is well designed and is even programmable (best for 12 and above in my view, younger with help). I thought it was a boy's toy, but girls love it as well. The batteries all come with it and a recharger. I found it entertaining for even adults. This would make any kid very happy. The low design, big tires, and stability make it a insane fun toy for the family.

  2. This toy has been a blast for me and my 4-year-old son. For the money, it's a great remote controlled vehicle. It's been durable enough that I'm not worried about letting him use it.

    PRO's
Fast with lots of torque- it will spin the tires if you floor it.
Durable - we've crashed it, flipped it, jumped it, driven it through wet grass... This thing is made to do stunts.
Remote is pressure sensitive - some remotes seem to be from 0 to 100% with nothing in between, even when you just push the throttle forward halfway. The Tonka's is appropriately sensitive. If you push it about 1/3 forward, you'll accelerate and drive more slowly, 2/3 is faster, all the way is fastest.
Stunts are pretty not too hard to master and reasonably intuitive. My 4 year old had driven a cheap drug store RC car that lasted about 3 hours before self-destructing. It had a different RC mechanism, so the Tonka's traditional two-stick style was new to him. By the end of his second session of driving it, he could steer it around in circles at low to medium speeds and could make it flip.
I wish RC cars were 1/4 as cool when I was a kid. This thing is really fun.

Not PRO's (not really CON's though)
Longer battery life and shorter charge times would always be nice, but the battery lasted longer than I expected -- probably 20 minutes, minimum. There are lots of online sellers of extra batteries, just search google. Buy a couple extras. As mentioned, the battery replacement for this car is probably it's one design error. You have to remove two small philips head screws. Of course, the well sealed compartment is probably why it has handled being rocketed through puddles without showing any signs of damage.
Tires can partially dislodge from their rims and become wobbly after a bunch of spin-outs. They just pop back into place, with ease.

  4. This car is a great toy for older kids. It can move very fast so it isn't ideal for inside use. It will quickly bump and slam into everything when you drive it inside. It is a lot of fun because you can make it flip over and keep going. It is also smart in the sense that when it is flipped over, the forward controls make it go forward (even though the car goes the other direction when it was on its other side - if that makes sense).

The battery charges fast so that is great too. You can have a lot of fun slamming into everything and flipping the car over and over.

  5. We bought this for our 3-year-old for Christmas because he kept asking for the youger kids' Bounce-back Racer version. After reading the mediocre reviews for that one I decided on this even though it appeared to be a little advanced for him. I was right, but it was well worth it! My son loves it, but he is very timid about controlling it by himself, so my husband and I get to have all the fun while he happily watches. I know in no time at all this will no longer be the case, so I'm enjoying it while it lasts!

I also bought an additional battery because many reviewers said it drained quickly, but we haven't needed it yet. It's just too cold to stay outside with a kid his age for very long, and it is a bit too powerful to have an extended session in our small house. It is also much larger and sturdier than I expected, so that makes it more cumbersome in the house as well. It can be done tho, just not at its full potential.

On Christmas day we took it out and jumped it off of our 4-step concrete stairs and out into the asphalt street, over curbs, grass and dirt with very minimal scratches, and it never got high-centered. I even managed to get it up on two wheels for a short stint!

Overall it was an excellent purchase, and I'm glad I left it in my cart for a few days because the price fluctuated greatly before Christmas, and I ended up getting it for $39.99.

My only advice it to know that you will get the greatest enjoyment out of this thing outside in a large space where you can really let it loose.

  6. Length:: 4:24 Mins

I really like the Tonka Ricochet remote control car. It is a well built speed demon that is will burn rubber on the cement, but also has the power to cruise around on grass. While it does have a couple of quirks concerning the battery it absolutely scores an A+ in terms of fun. The Tonka Ricochet is able to reach impressive speeds on wet or dry pavement with significant range (75-100 feet).

    A few other notes

    - The battery is packed almost dead, so if this is a present you may want to open the box and charge the battery. Otherwise, this is one Christmas present that require 4 hours before it can be played with.

    - As mentioned it takes 4 hours to charge the battery.

    - Speaking of the battery, it must be completely removed from the car in order to be charged. This is not a difficult, but it does require a philips head screw-driver. While older kids ay not have an issue removing the batter younger kids may need the help of a parent.

    - Battery life lasts for about 15 minutes - max.

    - The remote has the ability to record joy-stick commands. This will help you repeat tricks (Replay) tricks performed.

    - The tires seem to slide off the rims a little too easily. This makes it more difficult to control the car.

    - The tires on the car are soft un-inflated rubber. This provides for a softer landing on jumps and a bit extra cushion when it runs into things.

    - The car is completely reversible (See the video) it is pretty cool how quickly it able to "know" the difference between forward and revers.

Final verdict - While the Tonka Ricochet does have a few quirks it is great fun - even my wife agrees! Easy recommendation for any child over 8 years old.

    4 1/2 Stars

  7. I love this toy due to the rugged durability it offers. Hard plastic body protected by the wide forward design of the tires. This product is made to stand up to the abuse boys can deliver. Kids learn hand eye coordination while having fun! Great gift item.
